Quick answer
An individualized plan for employment (IPE) connects a specific employment outcome to the services needed to reach it. Look for services, providers, timing, progress criteria, and responsibilities—including any applicable cost-sharing and comparable-benefit responsibilities.
What to do
Write the employment outcome clearly enough to identify the relevant work.
For each service, explain the barrier it addresses and how it supports the outcome.
List the provider, start timing, expected duration where applicable, and each party’s responsibilities.
Check how progress will be evaluated. Read the entire plan before signing and keep the signed version.
Limits and deadlines
Under 34 CFR 361.45(e), the initial IPE must be completed as soon as possible and generally within 90 days of eligibility; an extension must be agreed to a specific date. Order-of-selection rules may affect service availability.
The individual and a qualified agency counselor must agree to and sign the IPE. A personal proposal or worksheet is not an approved IPE.
