Quick answer
Informed choice means having information and support to participate in vocational rehabilitation (VR) decisions. It applies throughout the process, including assessments, the employment goal, services, providers, and ways to obtain services. It does not make every preferred service automatically payable.
What to do
Name the decision you need to make and the information you are missing.
Ask for a usable comparison: availability, cost, provider qualifications, accessibility, and relevant outcomes.
Explain which option meets your employment needs and why. Ask for communication support if useful.
Record the response and ask for the reason and review options if your request is denied.
Limits and deadlines
The agency still applies program requirements and individualized need. A preference is relevant evidence, not a guarantee.
There is no single nationwide appeal-request deadline in this guide. Read your state’s notice promptly.
Background, examples & sources
Documents to gather
- Current individualized plan for employment (IPE), if any
- Two or more options, when available
- Your questions and the agency’s written response
Fictional example
A person comparing two bookkeeping courses asks for schedules, accessible course formats, required equipment, and the reason one provider is recommended. The comparison helps explain a choice; it does not establish that funding was approved.
